The RGB Steel Alloy: Our search for the perfect steel
Our mum’s passion for gardening led us to look for the perfect garden bed. When our mother could no longer reach the ground, we decided to raise the ground to her.
We needed to find a solution that was strong, durable, cost-effective and most importantly, safe. The right material required a proven track record of durability, unique soil retention ability, and coatings that were safe for growing.
After tirelessly researching, and testing different materials without much success, we knew there had to be a better way, and we were determined to find it.
The result? The RGB Steel Alloy.
What is RGB Steel Alloy?
RGB Steel Alloy is a specially formulated galvanized steel blend with a corrugated profile designed for gardening. Up to 2x as thick and with up to 2x the zinc coating as other garden beds, RGB Alloy Steel not only looks great but performs exceptionally well in retaining soil, supporting healthy plant growth, and can endure the Canadian elements (and winters!)
RGB Alloy Steel is made in accordance with RoHs (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances) standards so you can rest assured they’re manufactured without intentional additions of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium.
Why We Chose Galvanized Steel
Galvanized steel was specifically chosen because it’s been extensively studied, tested, and used in outdoor applications.
The zinc coating on galvanized steel provides excellent protection against corrosion and rust, making it a dependable choice for outdoor applications. Plus, zinc is an essential mineral that’s safe for human consumption, so you can be confident that your garden is free from harmful contaminants.
Additional Information
Aluzinc/Galvalume is a type of steel coating that blends zinc, aluminum, and other additives. Aluzinc is primarily used for roofing and siding.
Due to the high amounts of aluminum, Aluzinc has a softer surface than Galvanized steel and is more prone to scratching and denting, causing rust to develop quicker.
No domestic steel manufacturer recommends or warranties pre-painted Aluzinc/Galvalume in applications that involve direct contact with soil.
Most pre-painted Aluzinc gardening products are manufactured overseas and often contain additives, like hexavalentchromium, to stabilize the paint and improve adherence. These types of additives can be carcinogenic and harmful to our environment and well being.
Advertising may create the impression that certain paints have been USDA approved but did you know that USDA only provides approval for incidental food contact not continuous use as a growing medium? No studies have ever shown that pre-painted Aluzinc will not leech into your soil and plants.
